Canadian Atlantic longline swordfish fishery certification and loggerhead turtles

Eco-certification still being considered even as U.S. proposes to list loggerhead turtles as "endangered"

  1. What does one have to do with the other? The estimated take of loggerhead turtles by the Canadian longline swordfish fishery makes up less than 1% of the total human induced mortality for this species in the North West Atlantic. This fleet has taken many steps to reduce loggerhead interactions and even more steps to reduce the impacts of those interactions. Strangely this is never mentioned by the Suzuki Foundation. Another fact never mentioned is the fact that U.S. fisheries have approximately 149,000 loggerhead turtal interactions annually. I wonder why the U.S. might be looking at up listing the species?
